Your senior year is one of the most exciting milestones of your life, and your senior pictures should reflect who you are today while creating timeless portraits you'll love for years to come.
One of the most common questions we hear at Robert Senn Studio is, "What should I wear for my senior portraits?" The good news is you don't need an entirely new wardrobe. With a little planning and a few simple guidelines, you can choose outfits that photograph beautifully and showcase your personality.
For nearly 60 years, Robert Senn Studio has been creating stunning senior portraits for students throughout Canfield, Youngstown, Poland, Warren, Columbiana, and the Mahoning Valley. Here are our favorite tips for selecting outfits you'll love every time you look at your portraits.
The best senior portraits reflect your personality, so start by choosing clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable. If you rarely wear formal clothing, don't feel like you have to dress up just for your session. On the other hand, if you enjoy dressing up, bring an outfit that reflects your personal style. Your senior pictures should celebrate who you are—not who someone else expects you to be.
When choosing colors, solid tones almost always photograph beautifully because they keep the attention where it belongs—on your face. Timeless colors like navy, burgundy, forest green, dusty blue, olive, cream, white, black, and other soft earth tones create classic portraits that won't go out of style. Select colors that complement your skin tone, eye color, and the season of your portrait session.
Add Variety with Layers & Multiple Outfits
One of the easiest ways to create a diverse senior portrait gallery is by bringing multiple outfits. We recommend including a casual everyday look, a dressier outfit, your school colors or letter jacket, a sports uniform or activity outfit, and something that highlights your hobbies or personality.
Adding layers is another simple way to create different looks without changing your entire outfit. Denim jackets, leather jackets, blazers, sweaters, cardigans, and vests all photograph beautifully while adding depth and texture to your portraits. Fabrics like knit sweaters, linen, suede, corduroy, and denim also create timeless, visually interesting images.
Keep It Timeless
Senior portraits should look just as beautiful twenty years from now as they do today. Choose clothing with subtle patterns and classic styling rather than bold trends that may quickly feel dated.
Avoid large logos, busy graphics, bold lettering, neon colors, and overly trendy patterns that can distract from your face. If you're planning to include parents, siblings, or even your pet in a few portraits, think coordinate rather than match. A complementary color palette creates a polished, natural look without everyone wearing the exact same outfit.
Complete the Look
The little details can make a big difference. Wear clothing that fits well—not too tight or too loose—so you'll feel comfortable and confident throughout your session. Try on every outfit a few days beforehand to make sure everything fits the way you'd like.
Don't overlook your shoes. If your portraits include full-length poses, they'll be part of the final images. Clean them before your session, and if you're wearing heels or dress shoes, consider bringing comfortable shoes to walk between locations.
Accessories are another great way to personalize your portraits. Simple jewelry, watches, scarves, hats, meaningful necklaces, class rings, and letter jackets can add character without becoming the focus of the image.
Showcase What Makes You Unique
Your senior year is about celebrating everything you've accomplished and the person you've become. Consider bringing items that reflect your interests and passions, such as sports equipment, musical instruments, dance shoes, art supplies, academic awards, your cap and gown, or even your pet.
These personal touches help tell your story and create senior portraits that are as unique as you are.
One of the most common things parents say after a portrait session is, "I can't believe how much they've grown."
Childhood moves quickly, and every stage deserves to be remembered. Professional portraits preserve those fleeting moments while creating artwork your family will treasure for generations.
Whether you're celebrating your baby's first steps, a first birthday, siblings growing together, or simply another wonderful year together, today's portraits become tomorrow's treasured memories.
Most seniors bring three to five outfits that include a mix of casual, dressy, school spirit, and activity-specific clothing.
